What's different in the Huawei Ascend Mate7 in comparison to the Mate2?
The Ascend Mate7 remains a phablet by offering a big screen with a big battery. It retains the six inch screen, but features several notable differences:
- The Mate2 was made of plastic as do most smartphones, but the Mate7 comes in a slim, metal body. The Mate7 now has a premium, high-end look with almost no bezel next to the display, very different from its predecessors which were much more ordinary in terms of looks.
- The Mate7 features a fingerprint scanner at the back, which is something that very few smartphones have. The fingerprint scanner can be used to enhance the security of your mobile phone to give an added sense of security if you're worried about your phone getting stolen and confidential data falling into the wrong hands.
- The Mate7 had a quad-core processor. The Mate7 has a octa-core processor, which consists of two separate quad-core processors. One is more powerful and faster for demanding tasks, while the other is used for less demanding tasks because it requires less power.
- The battery capacity in the Mate7 remains roughly the same in terms of capacity at slightly more than 4000 mAh, but it's of a different type. The Mate7 replaces the Lithium-Ion battery with a Lithium-Polymer type, which should improve battery life somewhat.
- The previous Mate2 only had a regular HD screen with a resolution of 1280x720. However, the Mate7 now comes with a Full-HD display with a resolution of 1920x1080, which is a better fit for screens six inches or above.
- The biggest difference between the Mate7 and the Mate2 would have to be cost. While the Mate2 is priced at around $300 or less, the Mate7 costs more than double at around $700. In other words, you can have two Mate2's for the price of one Mate7 with cash to spare.

Comparing the Huawei Ascend Mate2 and the Ascend Mate7
In my opinion, the Mate7 cannot really be a replacement of the Mate2 because they're two completely different phones that target different sections of the public. People who are interested in getting as much as they can for their money should look at the Mate7 because it's a great phone in terms of value. If money is important to you, the Mate2 is really a great option.
On the other hand, the Mate7 goes after trendy people who don't really care about price, but would just like to have the latest and greatest and do not mind paying for it. The Mate7 is obviously superior to the Mate7 in terms of hardware. It's much, much better looking with its slim metal body compared to the more pedestrian looks of the Mate2. In almost every aspect, the Mate7 is at least as good as the Mate2.
However, that does not necessarily make the Mate7 a better phone than the Mate2. The improvements in hardware are more than offset by the huge increase in price. Granted, the Mate7 as a number of improvements, but those improvements do not justify the more than doubling in price.
Not everybody wants or even needs a fingerprint scanner and most people will do just fine with a plastic body. While the extras found on the Mate7 deserve a higher price than the Mate2, the price increase is just too much, especially when the Mate2 offered such a nice package at a great price.
The Mate2 may not have as many fancy features as the Mate7, but its much lower price makes it a better value for the average person. While some people may benefit from the Mate7, most people are probably better off picking the Mate2 ahead of the Mate7 in my opinion.

Overall evaluation of the pros and cons of the Huawei Ascend Mate7
Huawei has really changed direction with the Ascend Mate7. It's now a mobile phone aimed at the high-end of the market, whereas its predecessors were suitable for the mainstream general public. The Mate7 is for those who want a flashy phone and are not concerned as much as to how much they pay.
The phone itself is gorgeous, sturdy, fast and runs all software. It has great multimedia capabilities with a large Full-HD screen, great sound and two cameras that take nice pictures. The phone will easily last the whole day with battery life to spare.
The fingerprint scanner offers a different take on how security is traditionally implemented on mobile phones. You now no longer need to remember a password, which can be useful for those who have trouble remembering their password. The Mate7 would make for a great smartphone if not for one big issues and that's the price.
The Mate7 abandons the great value that the Mate-series had offered until now. Previously, Mate phones may not had the greatest specs, but they offered a competitive package at a great price. The Mate7 now tries to incorporate some of the latest features, but you'll have to pay through the nose to get what you want.
The Mate7 should appeal to some people. Its looks alone ensures that there will be people out there that will pick it as their next phone. However, for most people price does matter and will shop around to get the best deal they can find which is something that unfortunately can't be said of the Ascend Mate7. Most people will therefore probably pass on the Mate7 in favor of something else.
