While the price of the Ascend P6 was on the low side for its class, it was still a high-end phone and therefore out of reach for the average person. To make the phone more accessible to people, a cheaper version would have to be available. This is where the Ascend G6 comes in and its updated version, the Ascend G6 4G.
The Ascend G6 tries to incorporate much of what people liked in the Ascend G6 in a cheaper package. Not surprisingly, the two phones look similar in certain respects as the design of the G6 is based on the P6. However, there are a number of differences between the Ascend G6 and Ascend P6.
Comparison of the differences and similarities between the Ascend G6 and Ascend G6 4G
There are actually two models of the Ascend G6. The original G6 and the newer Ascend G6 4G. The differences between the two smartphones are:
- As the name suggest, the Ascend G6 4G includes support for 4G LTE, which allows for faster data transfers than the 3G connections found on the Ascend G6.
- Another difference is that the Ascend G6 4G version has increased the number of 3G frequencies that it supports compared to the original.
- The Ascend G6 4G has an updated processor and includes a faster graphics processing unit (GPU).
- The Ascend G6 4G doubles the amount of internal storage from 4 gigabytes in its predecessor to 8 gigabytes.
- The Ascend G6 4G is slightly larger physically in terms of width, height and thickness.
The similarities of the Ascend G6 and G6 4G include:
- Both models draw inspiration from the Ascend P6 design and include a metal frame that surrounds the body.
- Both have the same 8 megapixel camera in the back and 5 megapixel camera in the front.
- Both come with a 4.5 inch LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 960 x 540.
- Both phones have one gigabyte of random access memory (RAM).
- Both have a non-removable 2000 mAh Lithium-Ion battery.
There are also other small differences in terms of the software installed. However, those differences can be removed by upgrading the software to the latest version.

Comparison of the differences and similarities between the Ascend P6 and Ascend G6
Notable differences between the two phones are:
- While the Ascend P6 was a high-end phone, the Ascend G6 is a mid-range phone with a lower price.
- The phones are different in terms of size. Notably, the Ascend G6 does not have the 6.18 mm thickness of the Ascend P6.
- The P6 had a 4.7 inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720, while the G6 has a 4.5 inch screen with a resolution of 960 x 540.
- The P6 had a Lithium-Polymer battery, while the G6 has a Lithium-Ion battery that's cheaper, but won't last as long.
- The G6 contruction is not as high as the P6, although you can't directly tell by just looking at it. For instance, the back of the G6 is made of plastic, unlike the P6.
- The G6 has less metal than the P6. As a result, the G6 doesn't feel as solid as the P6 and is almost certainly not as durable.
- The metal back of the P6 cannot be opened and the sim card and MicroSD card were inserted in slots to the side. In the G6, you have to remove the plastic backplate to insert both cards.
- The P6 had two gigabytes, twice the number of RAM found in the G6.
The similarities between the Ascend P6 and G6 include:
- Both have the durable metal frame, although the one on the G6 is not as nice as the one on the P6 in my opinion.
- The P6 and G6 did not initially support 4G LTE. For that you need the updated versions, the Ascend P6S and Ascend G6 4G respectively.
- Externally, the phones resemble each other, but the G6 is not as good as the P6.
Compared to the P6, the Ascend G6 is not quite as nice in my opinion, even if it does bear a strong resemblance.

Evaluation of the pros and cons of the Huawei Ascend G6 4G
In my opinion, the Huawei Ascend G6 4G is a viable alternative for those people who liked the design of the Ascend P6, but couldn't afford its price. The Ascend G6 largely retains the same look, although it's not an exact clone of the original. It's not as thin to give it the same premium look of the P6.
Except for the two cameras and the metal frame, most specifications on the Ascend G6 have been downgraded from the high-end P6. It's now a mid-range smartphone, but with the external look of a higher-end smartphone and a lower price. Whether someone finds a phone attractive is somewhat subjective, but most people will probably like the external design of the G6.
Other people that might be drawn to the Ascend G6 are people who are outside or travel a lot, such as business people. The durable metal frame makes it much more sturdy than other smartphones that are usually made of plastic. The G6 can take a hit and can survive drops that would normally break most smartphones.
Another strong point of the Ascend G6 4G are its cameras. Taking pictures is no problem as the G6 cameras are better than the ones on most mid-range smartphones. There jusst isn't as much noise around. The difference is most noticeable when you take pictures when there isn't as much light around. The front camera takes bigger and clearer pictures. The G6 is good at taking selfies or pictures of yourself.
The 4G version also supports most frequencies. That makes it a good choice when you travel abroad as the G6 will be compatible with whatever it is that a carrier network might use. Many other smartphones only support a few frequencies, which means that you cannot use these smartphones if you go somewhere where they use something that the smartphone doesn't have.
However, if looks or a metal body don't matter as much to you, then the Ascend G6 is relatively expensive at around $250. There are other smartphones, including from Huawei, that are much cheaper and are almost the equivalent of the G6. The only catch is that they come in a more conventional body completely made of plastic as do most smartphones.
Smartphones made of metal are harder and more expensive to make and deserve to be more expensive than equivalent smartphones made of all plastic. Therefore, whether the Ascend G6 4G is good or bad depends on whether someone is willing to pay extra for its metal body and attractive looks. If the answer is yes, then the G6 is good. If not, then you might want to look elsewhere.
Pros:
- Attractive design with metal frame
- Supports most radio frequencies
- Good cameras
- Metal build makes it more expensive
- Battery is not replaceable
- Battery-life is below average
