Huawei Ascend P6 and P6S Comparison Review – Pros and Cons

Huawei is now on the five largest manufacturers of smartphones, but a lot of people are still not familiar with that brand. Other brands such as Nokia and Motorola are much better know, despite being smaller than Huawei.

Part of the problem was that Huawei would not bring out a lot of products under their own brand. To raise their brand recognition, Huawei intends to release more products with the brand Huawei, including some that are designed to raise awareness among the public. The Ascend P6 falls in that category.

The P-series is a line of smartphones from Huawei are targeted at those people who are most interested in a phone that's fashionable, elegant and stylish first and foremost. If the looks of a smartphone is what's most important to you, then the P-series is what you're looking for.

What are the differences between the Huawei Ascend P6 and Ascend P6S?

The Ascend P6 and P6S are two versions of the same model smartphone from Huawei. They are similar in looks from the outside and in terms of dimensions. However, the P6 and P6S are not exactly the same, but differ in the following ways:
  • The P6S has 16 gigabytes of internal storage, twice the amount of 8 gigabytes in the P6. However, the P6S storage cannot be expanded as it lacks a MicroSD slot unlike the P6.
  • The P6S comes with a newer and faster processor from Huawei and a more powerful graphics coprocessor.
  • The P6S supports the installation of two sim cards, while the P6 supports just one sim card.
The other specifications for the P6 and P6S are the same. The P6S seems to be for the China market, although it could be used anywhere else. The P6 is marketed everywhere in the world.

What's to like about the Huawei Ascend P6 and P6S

Here's what is good about the Huawei P6:
  • The P6 is a very good looking phone. It's very thin and will certainly stand out from the crowd. It looks somewhat like the Apple iPhone, but is still different. The P6 was designed to look good and it doesn't disappoint in this regard.
  • The P6 body is made of brushed metal. Not only does that give the phone a high-end look, it's also more sturdy than plastic phones. The Huawei should last longer than other phones as it cannot be damaged as easily.
  • The P6 comes with a 4.7 inch touchscreen which is large enough to handle almost anything, but not too large that it cannot be handled with one hand. The phone is also much lighter than you would expect.
  • The P6 comes with a 5 megapixel camera in the front, which is much larger than most phones out there. Even high-end smartphones usually come with two megapixels or less. The P6 is great for taking selfies or pictures of yourself.
  • The P6 comes with Huawei's EmotionUI skin on top of the Android operating system. The software is very customizable to give it whatever look you desire. There are lots of settings for you to adjust and try out.
  • Despite offering a lot, the P6 is still priced reasonable considering what it offers. If you're looking for a high-end phone without the customary high price tag, the Huawei P6 makes for a good choice.

What's not to like about the Huawei Ascend P6 and P6S

Here's what is not so good about the Huawei P6:
  • The P6 is missing a few features that are standard on high-end smartphones. It only supports 3G and not the much faster 4G LTE for the fastest connection speeds. These 4G networks are becoming more and more common, but the P6 cannot take advantage of them.
  • Due to its very compact design, the P6 can get hot if you use certain software apps than stress the CPU and GPU. High-end 3D games cannot be played for too long as the phone will get too hot to hold.
  • Battery life is only average due to its thin design. Even though it's actually quite good for its class, you will still have to watch the battery indicator to make it through the day. If you don't want to charge your phone every day, you will have to get a thicker phone with a bigger battery.

General impressions of the pros and cons of the Huawei P6 and P6S

The P-series sits somewhere between the mid-range G-series and high-end D-series from Huawei. In terms of price, it's closer to mid-range phones than high-end phones. In terms of features such as metal build and so on, it's closer to high-end phones. That makes the Huawei a good value as it saves you money.

The Huawei is a good choice if you need a smartphone that can take a hit. Its metal body and scratch-resistant Gorilla glass screen won't get damaged as easily as other smartphones. If you need a phone that will hold up over time, the P6 will do.

Between the P6 and P6S, the P6S is probably a better choice as you can use two phone numbers with just one smartphone. For example, you could separate your private life from business matters with each number. Dual sim support is very versatile and useful to have.

The Huawei is not a good choice if you're a power user who needs lots of battery juice. If you have to use your phone often or for long hours during the day, it's probably a better idea to get a thicker phone. For most people, the phone should be enough for a whole day.

Overall, if the exterior of a smartphone is what's most important, then the Huawei P6 should be at the top of your list. It's a phone that people will want to take a look at as it attracts attention. If you like the attention, then this is the smartphone you're looking for.

Pros:
  • thin and stylish design
  • sturdy as it's made of metal
  • large, scratch-resistant screen
  • good price/value ratio
  • front camera is 5 megapixels
  • customizable with themes and settings
Cons:
  • body can get hot
  • no 4G LTE
  • average battery life
